• A Wetaskiwin burgh official says the municipality is "going to spend a tonne of money" on the Wetaskiwin Airport in systemization to comply with tougher Transport Canada regulations.
Ted Gillespie made that remark just prior to bishopric council voting 3-2 to keep the Wetaskiwin Airport certified, a status it has held since 1970.
The matter came to ignition at city council's July 25 regular meeting.
"I can tell you I'm an airport supporter, too, my whole soul, and I'm an ex-pilot," Gillespie told council. "I don't think it's the right thing to do (staying) certified.
"They're (Shipment Canada) making it too tough on us. Our energies are going to be focused in the wrong direction.
"We're going to spending a tonne of spinach on nothing to do with the service level of the airport, or the level of maintenance at the airport."
City council was told Take Canada has given the City of Wetaskiwin an Aug. 8 deadline.
