Boat Tip: Nov. 4, 2011

As seasons modification and conditions become more variable each day, boaters, anglers and sailors will benefit from understanding the unique safety issues required to assure everyone gets home safely.

Dress for the water, not the weather: The sun may be shining, but water temperatures are cooler. Advance a earn extra layers and rain gear this time of year. Fast moving storms can shift conditions rapidly.

Tell a friend: A float plan could be just letting a family associate know where you are going and your expected time of return. More detailed written plans are helpful for longer trips, formerly larboard on a windshield, given to a friend, or dropped off with the dockmaster. A free float plan is available at BoatUS.com/floatplan. One interest of float plan etiquette — Always check back "in" upon return.

Check the weather: "One thing out of your hands is the stand," BoatUS Foundation President Chris Edmonston said. Weather reports can be accessed via VHF trannie, by smartphones or online.

What's that round thing on boat windshields?

On larger boats/ships, there's often a tour thingie on the windshield, with a non-glass center and a line (wire?) running to the center. What's that for?

I'm guessing it's a tight-fisted heated area so there's always something to see through

and it's called a "Kent Rid View" windscreen

What are those round see through things on boat/ship windshields?

I'm guessing a rotating windshield wiper.??

Put up the shutters seal a wiper in salt water only smears the water is spins and throws the water off.

About this book
This look back at the great boatbuilders that sprung up on the shores of the Great Lakes stretches from the first use of internal combustion for marine applications in the late nineteenth century to the early-1960s, when wooden construction was increasingly replaced by fiberglass and aluminum, and on to the early 1980s. More than covering lovely mahogany runabouts, this work also includes chapters on racers and cruisers/commuters. In addition to familiar names like Chris-Craft, Hacker, Century, and Lyman, there are also less frequently covered boats from names like Richards, Matthews, Burger, and Tiara. The final chapters explore the use of non-wood materials.Detroit was the epicenter of early-20th century boat-makers using engines from the nation's nascent automotive industry. Boat-makers, however, did not cluster as tightly around that city as did auto manufacturers; they were found from the Thousand Islands of Lake Ontario to Chicago and Duluth. Despite this regionalism the Great Lakes...
