I have a '71 Tahiti jet speedboat that has gel coat that is rough to the touch. it feels almost like a fine sandpaper. I was thinking that wet sanding and buffing it might refrain from but wasn't sure. I bought the boat 4 years ago and it has been

I would take it in to a skiff yard that does fiberglass work , and ask them what they recommend.
There are polishes for gel coat that will improve minor pitting , and a effects wax job will seal it .
If the fiberglass is badly damaged then

If it's metal go to, there's nothing you can do except
paint.
If it's paint try rubbing or polishing compound.
Boat US sells a gel coat sealing liquid you can wipe on. It lasts a combine of years.

Does anyone Know how to remove paint from a boat without damaging the gel coat?
Sep 09, 2007 by dsaf f | Posted in Boats & Boating
I'm restoring and old rowing-boat that was originally finished in yellow gel coat, which seems to be intact. The boats been painted twice and when I chip away the paint, i can see the gel coat underneath it. I suppose it was just painted with an enamel
you could try a harsh based paint remover or toluol based thinners. If it is an oil based paint sometimes petrol/gasoline works. try a foolish section in an unseen area first. good luck

Gel coat fibre glass boat?
Dec 20, 2007 by Steven William R | Posted in Boats & Boating
I asked yesterday about the paramount paint to use for fibre glass, I have decided on Gel coat, does any one know what preperation is needed and if I can use two colours, does the identity mix with gel coat or do I apply colour first then the gel coat.
Gel coat is the devour layer in the fiber-glassing process. To re-gel-coat a boat is a monumental task. You have to sand or grind off the unusual gel-coat and reapply a new layer.... You would be better off with a 2-part polyurethane paint.

Do I use Gel Coat or Marine Tex for repair?? - The Hull Truth
by nick7744
I perfectly finished adjusting my trailer because my bunks were grinding on my gelcoat when loading and unloading. Optimistically I have solved the tough nut to crack. Now I basic to mend the section where it is scraped. To look at the ground it kinda looks like the glowering from the bunks have rubbed off on the extent. But if you took your paw and slid it up and down across the get along you would detect an indent about 2 inches across and about 2 feet extended. The lowering is the fiberglass behind the gelcoat. I contacted a gelcoat into working order unsuitable and they gave me a quoat. For several reasons I needfulness to intermission until November to get it professionally repaired. The gel coat guy said that I could patch up it myself now and he would go over the undivided compass later and it would not operational his condition job. I stopped by West Naval and they had a can of Put an end to Gel Coat and a box box of Thalassic-Tex. I also bought some colors to take a crack at to marry the most qualified I can. Never be familiar with, if I get it penurious enough I will not trouble to have it repaired. Which one would you use to do this quarter?? Drain Gel Coat of Maritime Tex. I have never worked with either. I have done drywall mud. It looks like it would be simular. Here is the impression. Not the greatest because I was indeed intriguing a model of something else. But you can see the scour on the top of the envisage. Its about 2 feet protracted. Thanks Gel coat all the way. I've acquainted with both and the Marinetex is leisurely to vocation with, but virtually preposterous to get the color repay, gelcoat won't pin to it and it exactly looks more non-professional when the job is unabated. Once I indeed old gelcoat I realized it's not that much more travail and it looks so much more maestro. With a small work you won't even be informed the trade has been done. The very defeat quirk to do is to get the apt gelcoat color from the producer and then you don't want to try and fit the color as it it will be done for you.
