How do I prepare an aluminum boat for painting?

I have an old aluminum boat I requirement to paint just to clean it up a little and want to know what I need to do or what type paint to use.It is fitting a small fishing boat
Prep it well-founded as you would any other painting project by sanding and cleaning the surface, then use zinc chromate primer before painting. Paint won't cooperate without that.

woodwin said the hush-hush words which are zinc chromate....the only primer.....once you have sanded and cleaned the boat...that really sticks to aluminum.
My in is that marine paints are usually made as a system; this topside ( finish) coat goes with this primer, but not that......so look for a drink up coat that says its compatible with zinc chromate....and if you're going to paint it snow-white, for goodness sakes, use semi gloss......gloss or high gloss shows up every line ding and imperfection...

I reasonable received a fishing boat that is aluminum. The person before me painted it brown but it is starting to come off and i want to make it look new again. How do i take the coating off with out recking the aluminum? What kind of paint do i need? Any finishes that i may need? What kind of price am i looking at to do all of this?
Painting should be casual. There is no need to sand all of the old paint off as long as its still adhering to the boat. Primer and paint. Make sure that the face is compatable with aluminum. I know that if you're leaving the boat in the water, make sure that the bottom paint you use is compatable. Most bottom paints hold back copper which will cause the aluminum to corrode.

18 ft. Lund Aluminum boat non painted bottom. Would it be cheaper to power swell bi- weekly than to apply anti foul paint ? Boat will be in water 2 months

I had my aluminum boat in the (poignancy)water for about three months.The key is when you pull it out of the water to wash it very good,and keep your motor tilted up out of the water.The boat won't suffer cheese-paring as much as the motor will.You can put some zinc annodes on it to help I suggest putting the majority of your effort in caring for the motor.I don't be versed where in Fl. your going but as a precaution stop in at a local marina and ask about adding some zinc's.

I recently purchased a 14' semi v aluminum fishing boat.
The boat was first purchased in the 1980s. While the structure is in good condition - it's in need of a paint job.
I'd like to think I have pretty good mechanical abilities... is it arduous to paint an aluminum boat?
What do I need to do?

if your boat has got old cosmetics on it that has to be removed first so either use paint remover or have the boat sand blasted the purchase some 2 part epoxy paint that is best for a boat you will stress an etch primer that is suitable for aluminium.
it is easy if you have time to spend on it and you will also need a spray gun.
have fun and you are favoured it is only 14 feet i just finished painting my boat it is 25 feet and it took me 4weeks to do it from start to finnish

Maintenance of Aluminum Boats
Aluminum Boats are fun counterglow wait and best of all low in maintenance. However a lot of people don’t realize that there is maintenance of Aluminum Boats. Maintenance of your aluminum boat is pretty unostentatious if you just follow these steps.
Licensing and Registration:
Yes that is part of maintenance. Most states require water artfulness to be licensed. Check with your states laws for this.
Checking that the seams are tight and there are no holes:
Place your boat in the unworkable, do you see any water coming in places other than just from water splash. If so then find the area and mark it, next you will want to buy some freely proof clear patching material and patch the hole or seam. Make sure it is dry before you area it otherwise the leak may continue and also make sure it is dry before you put it back on the water. It is good to do this check whenever you are out on the water for an extended stretch of time.
Paint:
Does your aluminum boat need the paint touched up. If so make sure you use paint designed for Aluminum Watercraft a boat value in your area should have or be able to get what you need.
As you can see maintenance of aluminum boats is not really difficult and can save you trouble down the track. Happy boating.
