Experimental foot ferry won't run between Bremerton, Seattle this year Seattle Times

BREMERTON — Kitsap Movement's new research ferry will arrive in three months, but the low-wake catamaran won't run between Bremerton and Seattle for quite a while.

It will take about a year for environmental agencies to distinctly the high-tech prototype to go through Rich Passage, Kitsap Transit executive director Dick Hayes said during a congregation of the agency's board Tuesday. In the meantime, he said, the 118-person boat could shuttle passengers between Bremerton and Annapolis and Deo volente give the Admiral Pete time off for an upgrade.

Kitsap Transit is seeking to buy the Admiral Pete, which it has been leasing, from Kitsap Harbor Tours. The intervention would change it over to cleaner-burning engines and extend it 15 feet to increase capacity from 82 to 115 passengers.

The new $5.3 million catamaran ferry is the finishing stage of a Rich Passage wake study that began in 2005. Bellingham's All American Nautical plans to deliver it on April 19. The research, including the boat itself, has been paid for with federal funds, including $800,000 to evaluate the ferry on the Bremerton-Seattle route for about seven months with passengers aboard. That's now projected to come about from April 2011 to October 2011.

How do i paint an aluminum boat?

I justifiable received a fishing boat that is aluminum. The person before me painted it brown but it is starting to come off and i want to make it look new again. How do i take the coat off with out recking the aluminum? What kind of paint do i need? Any finishes that i may need? What kind of price am i looking at to do all of this?


Painting should be plain. There is no need to sand all of the old paint off as long as its still adhering to the boat. Primer and paint. Make sure that the cosmetics is compatable with aluminum. I know that if you're leaving the boat in the water, make sure that the bottom paint you use is compatable. Most bottom paints hold back copper which will cause the aluminum to corrode.

I would consult someone at a restricted boat shop, or your hardware store, you could sand the old paint off or use and aluminum safe stripper....and then steel wool it....then seal it...consult a professional.....it shouldn't expense very muh if you do it yourself though....


Extremely sand clean and wash the aluminum surfaces. Be sure that there are no contaminants left behind by the stripping process. Hold an acid etch "wash primer" from an industrial paint store and ask the folks there for directions to seek the wash primer to aluminum. The instructions are different for aluminum than for steel. If the folks at the paint store don't comprehend the difference then call the paint company and get directions from the technical folks there.

A good high quality "nautical" grade two component epoxy primer is in order. After you spray apply the primer, and consider it to dry then you may spray apply a two component polyurethane top coat paint. Be sure to check with the paint supplier to insure compatibility between the epoxy primer and the polyurethane top coat. Be sure that you are in an enclosed area with good ventilation before you proceed. A squeaky quality HVLP spray gun will do the job well. These spray guns are not inexpensive, so be sure that you will have other jobs to perform that will insist the use of a good spray gun. Be sure to select a gun that will matched to your compressor an HVLP gun will drain the air from an average living quarters compressor very quickly and the gun will not perform as expected. Know the specifications of your air compressor such as CFM (cubic feet) of air. Produce this information with you when shopping for HVLP spray gun. The spray gun will require enough CFM to perform at is highest level of value. Do not select a spray gun that requires greater CFM than four compressor can supply.


You don't say how big this boat is so I conclude its under 15'. The best thing to do is remove the old paint with chemical remover or sand blasting. Then you would prime it with zinc chromate and put a write 'finis' to coat over that of your choice of color. Or you can use a Hi build epoxy primer and then finish coat it. Paints that are worn on steel or fiberglass do not really stick to aluminum. Do not use a latex paint as it will fall off. Spray the paint on if you can for most talented finish, you may be able to rent a sprayer.


like all metals your beggary to prep it with a under coat or the paint will not stay on the metal. you can sand the paint off or scrap it then primer the boat. I would use a polytherelane apply it will out last any other and better suited for you job at hand..


If honest small runabout, wash real well with TSP. Then prime and use a gloss exterior grade latex go on a spree. Tell the guy at the paint counter you are painting alum siding. I know it sounds crazy to some of you but this obstruct adheres well and is very cheap as compared to some of the other posts.


unostentatious old aluminum will go threw the water better than any paint job ever will. best thing to do is power wash the rest of the represent off. when you get the majority off take a fine grade sandpaper, 100 or 120 grit and lightly sand the unreserved surface that contacts the water. this creates scratches in the metal, scratches trap air bubbles. more air, less attrition. this is what i do 2 times a year to the bottom of my 14 foot lund. looks nice and shiny from a detach and i go faster than the identical boat with identical motor !

How do I remove fiberglass from Aluminum boat?

Bought a Aluminum Jon boat which someone applied fiberglass to lawful the lower portion. Some of it peeled off easy, but the rest is really attached to the aluminum. I tried using a wirebrush on a indoctrinate, but this is taken forever. Any ideas how to easily remove it?


Typically, to dismiss or thin out the fiberglass, sanding works great. Use orbital sander and pretty coarse sandpaper (120-150 intrepidity).

Primmer/ sealer can be painted usally after a flash ease of at least 20 minutes and usally no more than a couple of hours. I'd sugguest using a true polyurethane enamel. imron or equililant. this is a solitary select stang paint, meaning it shines without needing a clearcoat.

Aluminum Fishing Boats. Way Better Than Fiberglass Boats.

If you're thinking of buying a fishing boat you have a edition of choices. Basically you can buy an aluminum fishing boat, a timber boat or a figerglass fishing boat.

Personally I'm a huge fan of aluminum boats, and would never buy a fiberglass boat. Here's why.

You're buying a boat because you inadequacy to be fishing, not working on boats. If you want to be working on boats buy a timber fishing boat and I can guarantee you'll waste many hours working on it. If you love that then fine, but for me I want to be fishing, not working on boats.

So timber is out. But what about fiberglass compared to aluminum. After all you see a lot of fiberglass boats out there.

What do you miss in a fishing boat? Well you want it to be tough. Water resistant. Impact resistant. Low maintenance. Long undying. Light. Easy to use.

Aluminum is all of these and more. It's extremely tough. It is welded not riveted, so is totally waterproof. It is highly repercussions resistant. That doesn't mean that it can't be holed, but it's pretty hard to do. Rather than get a hole aluminum tends to dent. This is matchless. If you hit something, as I recently did, you end up with a dent and head home feeling silly. If you hit something in a timber or a figerglass boat chances are drugged that you end up with a hole, and someone needs to come and get you because your boat is sinking.

Aluminum has a very high strength to weight ratio. So it's light and calmly to handle, both in the water and onto and off a trailer or even a roof of a car. It's incredibly strong and will take a stack of punishment. It needs very scant maintenance and will last forever.

A fiberglass boat on the other hand, has some drawbacks. It is heavier. It is less resistant to impact, and more easily holed. It takes a spoonful more maintenance, although much less than a timber boat. And if treated badly it can absorb water. Be careful not to damage the gellcoat,...
