minor, aluminum fishing boat, has sprung a leak, what's the best material to use for repair?
OK Shannon here's the attend to. If It is a riveted boat you can take a sledge hammer and lay it on one side of the rivet and take a second hammer and smack the opposite side for a quick fix and squish, no more leaky rivet. If it is a fault you can use aluminium JB weld, if used properly, and that will give you a temporary fix in till you can take it in and get a plate migged on. If you do, make undeviating they round off the edges. We've had the JB cold weld last all season, if your short on cash. Fiberglas does not occupation, it never did. Hope this helps.

We renewal boats on occasion at my shop. We use an aluminum patch and Tig weld it in. That's really the only correct way to repair it . Its also a area the will last a long time. The reason we use a patch is because most of the holes that get in these boats are a gradual wearing on the aluminum from running them up on the banks of lakes and rivers.

I improvement a lot of aluminum boats, riveted seams should be sealed with seals-all its kind of a elastic sealer wile the sealer is wet hammer and dolly the rivets beond the trickle area..Marine-Goop also works well that can be bought in Wal-Mart.. if its a Bow rub problem.. it should be welded ...Tig or mig.. then the approaching seams resealed cause the heat will burn out the sealer between the seems... I hope this is a help to you.... Proper Luck

Leaking aluminum boat...center keel?
Jul 15, 2007 by VBear | Posted in Boats & Boating
Boat (12') is leaking where the sides go through the floor at the front.....small crack (1/4 in. or so) at this location....looks like there may have been an original puff or stopper in this crack that was held in place with a screw or??
Is there some replacement part or fill the hole or???
Thanks
If you discern any welders, they can repair it no problem.
Or contact a welding shop with aluminum TIG welding capacity.
Your other option is to fill it with epoxy but that will be a stopgap patch just like any other
Welding is the only permanent fix

How can you stop a leak on an aluminum boat around the rivets?
Apr 12, 2007 by Coach J | Posted in Boats & Boating
"Rebucking" the rivets may assistants. Otherwise you will have to live with it or replace the leaking rivets with new ones. If the leak is not very big (water in the boat is 2" at the most after a day of use) you can do what I did to my aluminum boat: build a plywood amaze that stays above the water and install a small bilge pump.
