It has enormous 1/4 x1 1/2 rivets in it now and i can't find them anywhere. I was wondering what to use instead and if i used regular bolts what style of sealant to use. Thanks.
Aluminium and stainless, not a trustworthy match.
If you want this to be a long term fix and stainless is the only fastening you can get, I would suggest you have a nylon insert and washer where the stainless bolts would vamoose contact with the aluminium.
Yes, 5200 is a ideal sealant and if you use "5200 rapid cure" it will go off over dusk.

Swampman, go to Lowes and in the machinery department, get stainless steel screws 1/4 inch. I would use GE Silicon sealant. Make darn steadfast that the area you are going to seal is clean and dry, and give it an entire day to set up before doing anything with it.

Dan

I'll try to recall to ask a few people tomorrow at work.
I'm not sure if it's wise to have stainless and aluminum together for long periods of every now. They might react together in a negative way over time. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember something about this.
I would guess that silicon bronze might be good, but it's very high-priced.
If you want to do a permanent repair, use 5200 as a bedding compound. It takes a full week to cure, but it will be Abiding. I mean PERMANENT!
Did I mention that it would be PERMANENT!
Not kidding.

Has anyone tried hauling a 14 foot aluminum jon boat strapped down on top of a minivan? Will it work?
Apr 18, 2006 by ck33181 | Posted in Boats & Boating
I am buying a 14 foot directly bottom boat tomorrow. No motor or anything. Is it feasable to try and haul it home strapped down on top of my minivan (96 Mercury Villager). The boat is 14 feet covet and 56 inches wide at the top.
I don't plan on going that fast with it and I will be using several tie downs and bungee straps to protect it.
Buy yourself a canoe tie down kit that has 4 carbonation blocks that attach to the gunnels, Tie ends of jon to bumper or tow hooks firmly with and also tie over middle. Be carefull if it is bombastic.

Aluminum Jon Boat Question?
May 20, 2008 by Earstealer | Posted in Boats & Boating
I have a aluminum firm bottomed Lowe 1232 Jon boat and it is rated for a maximum of 3 HP. This sounds like an awfully small motor. Is it safe to put a larger motor on like a 5 or 6 HP?
Thanks.
A larger motor could occasion the stern to SQUAT when you open the throtle. This would put you in danger of swamping your jon boat by taking water in over the stern, causing your boat to go downhill or atleast fill with water.
Do Not exceed the ratings on a small vessel, horse power wise and albatross wise. Boat Safe!
