Buss: Dreams of days gone by Times Record News

I can’t reminisce over exactly when it happened, but the transformation began one miserably cold weekend at Possum Kingdom Lake when I was about 15 years old. The weather was much like what we’ve been having here the former times couple of weeks.

Maybe the blizzard of ’09 is what spurred this particular recollection. Being snowbound with pygmy to do but eat leftovers and feel sorry for myself for being home alone at Christmas, helped summon wicked old weather memories. In no standard order images came to mind like my first pair of polar-approved neoprene waders, Dr. Zhivago’s amble through Siberia and murderous winter fishing trips with my dad.

Wretched gloom seemed to be the order of the day at least once a year during a January or February fishing dive with my dad. Cold dark clouds. Icy wind and lingering mist. To my pop’s way of thinking, it was a perfect day for crappie fishing. Winter trips to the lake were forth dropping a line straight down through a large square hole in the middle of our reasonably warm boathouse. My dad could sit for hours waiting for the tip of his favorite sword rod to twitch or the taut line to move just a fraction.

how do you patch a hole in an aluminum Jon boat?

if its on a precise area take 2 pieces of alum sheet a little bigger then the hole drill matching holes in the 2 pieces around sides ,use 1 as model drill holes in boat,,smear silicon rubber cement on outside 1.place over hole, put other one on secret and pop rivet it in place using water proof rivets

there is aluminum epoxy if it's not too big. Or rightful epoxy.

i dont consider you can, buy a new one

weld it

Well you dire some aluminum to fill the hole. After that you need to cut the hole or the aluminum piece into the shape of the hole. Then take the piece of aluminum and insert it into the hole and you'll have to TIG braze it in. If the hole is small enough you can just TIG weld the hole closed with filler rod. If bigger than that you need to use the method above for using a tough spot piece of aluminum to fill it. Make sure the aluminum is clean before you weld to reduce impurities.

You can't

Epoxy is a ingenious fix, Although for a more permenant solution you would need to bring it to a Welding shop, let them sand and prep the area and add a aluminum (patch) and connect around tour leak.
Aluminum welding is very tricky, and requires a clean surface for the weld to adhere correctly. Be finical, anyone can put a bunch of glob on a weld, but you need to be sure to test it and make sure it is correctly bonded.

go to a machinery store in your area they sell several different products that you can use, jb weld is what i use and it is great. also a life saver, always announce duck tape in your boat, one time we were carrying my boat and we dropped it causing it to leak so we duck taped up the section and didn't get a drop of water in the boat.

The finest thing to do is take it a welding shop where they can use an aluminum rod and will fix it right up. They usually charge about $25.00 and it takes about 15 minutes to do.

if its on a speedily area take 2 pieces of alum sheet a little bigger then the hole drill matching holes in the 2 pieces around sides ,use 1 as templet drill holes in boat,,smear silicon rubber cement on outside 1.place over hole, put other one on advantageous and pop rivet it in place using water proof rivets

JB Link that is what i used

take it to a welding purchase that does tig welding

As much as I prospect these words would never come out of my mouth "Eric Estrada is right" lol although I think it might outlay more than $25.00. Take it to a local machine shop that can weld aluminum. Keep in mind welding aluminum is very tricky so make infallible it is a shop that does it all the time not some bonehead with a tig welder that says "yeah I should be able to do that"

me and my freind had to patch a slum in a boat and we used waterproof gorilla glue it holds up just fine and it dont leak any more

a teeny J.B. Weld should fix it...fixes just about everything!!

silicon

I have an aluminum jon boat with screw holes in the bottom how do I patch them so it won't leak water?

a yoke options
1 - take it to a welding shop and have them fill them
2 - waterproof epoxy make sure the metal is clean and wallop first.
3 - you could use self sealing pop rivets and rubber
4 - get a bigger bilge pump :-)

Trolling motor for 11 foot aluminum jon boat?

I am purchasing a 11 foot aluminum jon boat and trolling motor without battery for around $300 dollars. The boat has a few patches which wont be a big act on to fix, My father is a welder and said he would do them. Is that a good deal? Also my questions for the trolling motor. What type of battery is subdue recommended? They seem so expensive almost 200 dollars some places. I would hate to pay more for the battery then the entire boat. Im confused as to where i should be looking for batteries. I be acquainted with it would be helpful to know the size of the motor, and the voltage but I do have that information yet to pass along so I have to be general! Thanks in prepay!

Create acid batteries self discharge regardless of the location. Concrete is not an issue if your battery is on a conservation charge. There may be an issue with stratification outside in very cold weather with a battery that is not being maintained, however after a couple of months it will be at a low aver of charge anyway, and may be fatally injured anyway if it falls below 10.5 V Always wear safety glasses when doing anything to a battery!! Hydrogen is a artefact of charging and is extremely explosive. Batteries do blow up, literally into lots of pieces and the acid is something you do NOT call for in your eyes!!

The price is a direct reflection of the metal content and internal construction of the battery. You will get only as much as you pay for. No car battery will deal with with even a mild discharge cycle for very long, because they are not designed to do any more than start the engine - a brief very high simultaneous load for a few seconds and then the alternator supplies all power requirements when the engine is running. A deep pattern battery as sold in many places is best described as a 'less shallow' cycle battery, they can be pulled down to as much as 80% of faculty, but this may give you a life of as little as 75 - 150 cycles. If you only pull down a deepcycle battery to 50% the life bridge jumps to 400-600 cycles, maybe more if a quality battery is chosen, and cycle rates in the thousands if you never throw over below 30% are quite common. It is a fantasy to think a car battery can be pulled down to 100 % more than a few times before amount to failure, I have seen brand new batteries completely destroyed in 48 hrs. And as most batteries are never charged penurious 100% in their life it is amazing they last as long as they do frankly. Absorbant glass matt types are the bees knees for this claim, but they are expensive. Because they can cope with huge abuse for hundreds of cycles they often end up much cheaper in the long run. To charge AGM batteries you are most outstanding with a three stage charge unit, from a reliable company, like CTek or Federal. You cannot charge AGM and regular batteries together, in any configuration, ever - as the internal resistance is radically different.

The only unregulated charges I have succeeded with over the last thirty years are solar panels not extraordinary 20watts, with smaller batteries in the long days of summer I would not exceed 10 watts.

In the eight years of living on our blot out with no mains power and a family I was successful in destroying every known combination of battery, charger, generator and several electrical items. The only things I have now are the ones that occupation.

I'll stick a couple of my favorite links below. If you don't educate yourself, you won't know when the salesman is having a go, will you.

Decorous luck, and I hope you enjoy your new boat.
