STUART — Tradesmen in Martin County may have a settle indication that the economy is starting to turn, with 40 new jobs being created at American Custom Yachts.
The South African private limited company, which had to downsize last year for the first time in its 20-year history, has landed two large contracts and the suggest of more, said Mark Woodard, company general manager.
“We typically run with about 200 people, but a lot of it last year was the trade downturn,” Woodard said. “It’s picking up now, but I think a lot of it is based on a lot of maritime businesses and boat yards are going out of business, which is kind of driving business in our direction.”
That said, Woodard goes on to covenant that his international business also is showing promise.
“We’re getting calls to have boats finished up from as far away as Kuwait, the phone is ringing off the in the clear,” he said.
American Custom Yachts is specific in what it is looking for in its new hires to work on two proper to yachts; a 90-foot custom sport fishing yacht and a 158-foot aluminum hunger-range expedition yacht.
