STUART — Tradesmen in Martin County may have a settle indication that the economy is starting to turn, with 40 new jobs being created at American Custom Yachts.

The South African private limited company, which had to downsize last year for the first time in its 20-year history, has landed two large contracts and the suggest of more, said Mark Woodard, company general manager.

“We typically run with about 200 people, but a lot of it last year was the trade downturn,” Woodard said. “It’s picking up now, but I think a lot of it is based on a lot of maritime businesses and boat yards are going out of business, which is kind of driving business in our direction.”

That said, Woodard goes on to covenant that his international business also is showing promise.

“We’re getting calls to have boats finished up from as far away as Kuwait, the phone is ringing off the in the clear,” he said.

American Custom Yachts is specific in what it is looking for in its new hires to work on two proper to yachts; a 90-foot custom sport fishing yacht and a 158-foot aluminum hunger-range expedition yacht.

Do you paint a boat trailer the same as you would an aluminum boat?

You can clothes-brush or spray any paint. The key is in the prep work (cleaning and sanding).

If you don't mind some brush strokes, that'll trade fine.

I bought a VW bug years ago that had been painted the same color as the previous owners house.......wuth the same paint.......with a mangle! It suited me just fine!

You can twirl it on with a high nap roller. It works great.

How do i paint an aluminum boat?

I by a hair's breadth received a fishing boat that is aluminum. The person before me painted it brown but it is starting to come off and i want to make it look new again. How do i take the paint off with out recking the aluminum? What tender-hearted of paint do i need? Any finishes that i may need? What kind of price am i looking at to do all of this?

Painting should be quiet. There is no need to sand all of the old paint off as long as its still adhering to the boat. Primer and paint. Make sure that the paint is compatable with aluminum. I know that if you're leaving the boat in the drench, make sure that the bottom paint you use is compatable. Most bottom paints contain copper which will cause the aluminum to corrode.

I just bought an older aluminum boat with faded paint. How do I repaint it properly?

The boat is a 1979 17ft aluminum Crestliner. Lots of days in the sun faded the paint. It is currently red and ghostly and I think I will keep it that way. I don't need it to look like a show boat or anything, it's a fishing boat. I really don't penury to remove all the old paint and get the boat to bare metal. So whats the best way to get this done quickly and sightly more professionally than house paint and a broom?

Use a RO (accidental orbit) sander with a medium grit (150-ish) paper to sand all of the surfaces and give something for some new paint to stick to. Don't be too martial or you'll be looking at the aluminum

Clean the surface with wax/grease remover (paint prep). When it's clean, put to use a coat of decent primer. This can be done with a brush, roller, or sprayed on. Then apply something LOW gloss (hides any boo-boos wiser) in your choice of colors to cover the primer.

Should last for years - but remember, prep is the most important part.

EDIT: Thanks for the props, tiki - but if you don't go all the way down to the aluminum, I'd preserve the extra $$ that the zinc chromate primer would cost.

Aluminum Boats are fun go down wait and best of all low in maintenance. However a lot of people don’t realize that there is maintenance of Aluminum Boats. Maintenance of your aluminum boat is pretty candid if you just follow these steps.

Licensing and Registration:
Yes that is part of maintenance. Most states require water skill to be licensed. Check with your states laws for this.

Checking that the seams are tight and there are no holes:
Place your boat in the hose, do you see any water coming in places other than just from water splash. If so then find the area and mark it, next you will want to buy some the best quality proof clear patching material and patch the hole or seam. Make sure it is dry before you vamp it otherwise the leak may continue and also make sure it is dry before you put it back on the water. It is good to do this check whenever you are out on the water for an extended term of time.

Paint:
Does your aluminum boat need the paint touched up. If so make sure you use paint designed for Aluminum Watercraft a boat store in your ground should have or be able to get what you need.

As you can see maintenance of aluminum boats is not really difficult and can save you trouble down the road. Thrilled boating.
